I’m going to discuss an important regulation in my profession: Ministry of Finance Regulation No. 39/PMK/2024, which establishes the official rates for translation and typing services in Indonesia.
This regulation is designed to protect professional translators and interpreters from exploitation by setting a standard price of 250,000 rupiahs per 250 words. It ensures we receive fair compensation that reflects our skills and expertise.
Most people are unfamiliar with this policy unless they need professional translation services. For clients, this regulation may seem unpopular because the rates appear high. However, for translators, it’s essential protection. Without it, clients would demand unreasonably low prices—like 15,000 rupiah per page—which is completely inadequate given the current economy.
This regulation is important because it recognizes translation as a skilled profession requiring years of training. It prevents undervaluing our work and helps maintain quality standards in the industry. By setting official rates, it ultimately benefits both translators and clients who receive professionally translated documents. If people don’t want to pay professional rates, they can always use free tools like Google Translate, so I don’t see why anyone should complain about paying qualified translators for their work.
